CBI takes over probe into Cheriyathura police firing


 Saturday, February 11, 2012: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the sensational Cheriyathura police firing on May 17, 2009 in which six persons had died and several others were injured.
The CBI team would be investigating about the source of the explosives used by miscreants for the riot which led to the police firing. The CBI team from Mumbai reached Thiruvananthapuram and held talks with the Crime Branch ADGP Vincent M Paul.
The vital documents including the case diary was also handed over to the CBI team, sources said. The investigation team s headed by Assistant superintendent of police (ASP), CBI, Satish Dagar. Few days after the riots the forensic team had recovered highly explosive (Neogel 90) from the Cheriyathura.
The judicial commission, headed by District Judge K Ramakrishnan, who probed the Cheriyathura firing handed over the report to State Government on January 04, 2012.
There have been some clashes between the people of Muslim-majority Beemapalli and Christian-dominated Cheriyathura. The involvement of a goon named Kompu Shibu from Cheriyathura added to the problems which the police failed to control.
The clashes then led to the firing which killed six people from Beemapalli. Four policemen were suspended from service following the brutal incident.
