KOCHI: The police on Tuesday arrested Managing Director of Star Homes Builders Ajay V George for swindling customers. The police said that Ajay of Star Enclave, Edappally North, had taken money from the public promising apartments at Tripunithura and Aluva. But neither the flats had been handed over nor the money has been returned so far.
“The firm had taken money from people for a project in Aluva in 2004, convincing them that it will be completed by 2008. But the project still remains unfinished. They had a similar project in Tripunithura as well. Already there are three complaints filed against the firm,” Sub-Inspector Anil George said.
Of late, there has been an increase in such scams, said a police officer. “There was a case in which the investors were cheated by showing a fake brochure. There is a disclaimer written on the back stating that it is purely conceptual and not a legal offering. So no action can be taken against them,” he added.
“The only way to escape from the nets of such fraud builders is by checking their credentials and track record before paying the money. The client must also go through the whole contract and force the builder to add basic facilities like electricity and water supply so that they can take legal action if they fail to deliver,” the police officer added.
