Court seeks more security for women in trains

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court directed the government and the railways to take more steps to ensure the safety of women in trains. The court directed it while upholding the death sentence of the accused in the Soumya murder case.

The court asked to shift the women’s compartment to the middle part of the train. Women cops along with armed forces should be deployed in trains for the safety of women. Justices T R Ramachandran Nair and B Kemal Pasha directed to provide latest communication equipment to women cops. A copy of the court verdict should be sent to the railways.

The court expressed displeasure on the outlook of train commuters and said Soumya’s life could’ve been saved if other passengers had helped her.

The court severely criticised the defence counsel for levelling allegations against the victim. The court in harsh language said the counsel shouldn’t have stooped to that level.

The court also directed to send a copy of the order to the Kerala Bar Council and the Indian Bar Council.
