KOCHI: The Kerala High Court Tuesday upheld Thrissur Fast Track Court’s verdict sentencing Govindachamy, the accused in the Soumya murder case, to death.
A division bench of Justices T R Ramachandran Nair and B Kemal Pasha delivered the judgment after dismissing the appeal filed by Govindachamy against the verdict sentencing him to death.
The murder took place on February 1, 2011.
According to the prosecution, Govindachamy had pushed Soumya, 23, out of the Ernakulam-Shoranur passenger train on February 1 after attempting to rob her. He had raped the seriously injured woman after she fell down nearby the railway track at Vallathole Nagar. She succumbed to injuries at the Thrissur Government Medical College Hospital on February 6.
The Fast Track court awarded death sentence to the accused on November 11 in 2011.
Govindachamy’s advocate Counsel B A Aloor said they will approach the Supreme Court against the high court verdict. If the apex court too upholds the verdict, then he can file a mercy plea to the President.
