Letter Bomb case: 5-yr rigorous imprisonment for accused


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rajeev alias Sharma hailing from Attukal and convicted in the letter-bomb case was on Friday sentenced to 5-yr rigorous imprisonment.

Reading out the order, Additional Assistant Sessions Judge A Shajahan also asked the convict to pay a penalty of Rs 5000.
The case dates back to September 21, 2006 when the letter bomb exploded just minutes before the arrival of the then President APJ Kalam in Thiruvananthapuram.

The convict had sent four letter-bombs to persons against whom he had some grudge.  Of the four, two exploded at Manacaud post office at about 9:30am when the officials were sorting letters. Two more bombs were recovered in searches conducted thereafter.

Second explosion happened at the shop of one Suresh from Kesavadasapuram at around 12 in the noon.
