Gold smuggling: Police raid at Nedumbassery airport

NEDUMBASSERY: DRI officials conducted a sudden raid at Nedumbassery International airport on Saturday following information that large-scale gold was being smuggled out of the airport by passengers from Dubai.

The officials swooped down on the passengers and started checking the bags and luggage of the passengers, who were caught unawares.
From a native of Kasargode, 700 gram gold was seized. He had diligently concealed the gold in electronic goods. He is being thoroughly interrogated.

DRI officials got information that many people going to Dubai shopping festival bought gold in bulk quantities. But that much gold did not reach India through proper channel. This finding led the officials to suspect that smuggling was going on at airports.

By smuggling one kg gold to India from Dubai, the smuggler will get about Rs 2.5 lakh profit, the reason why it has become a lucrative business, according to officials.

The officials say the smuggler’s lobby has been attracting people to Dubai shopping festival by offering free flight ticket. On their return journey they will be asked to carry some electronics goods in which gold will be kept concealed without the travellers’ knowledge. Only when caught, they will come to know that they have been  used as a medium to smuggle out gold.
