KOTTAYAM: The six convicts in the Thidanadu Varkkichan murder case have been sentenced to life in jail. A Kottayam fast track court which gave the orders on Thursday has also asked each of the convicts to pay a fine of Rs 50,000. The court had let off four of the accused.
The case relates to the murder of George Thomas (Varkkichan, 48) from Kallacheri in a road rage. Judge P C Pollachan at the end of the trial came to the conclusion that the accused had committed the crime.
The convicts are first accused Talappulam Varinattu Biju,33, second accused Kochu veettil Ashiq Salam, 28, third accused Padikkapparambil Ajmal, 26, sixth accused Puthan Parambil Rafiq Jamal, 27, eight accused Valiyaparambil Saleem Basheer (shaji-27) and ninth accused Thundiyil Shabeer (40).
The incident occurred on January 27, 2008. After the church festival, the victim and his friends were returning home in a car. When they reached Veyilukampara, the convicts intercepted their vehicle and beat them up severely for allegedly not making way for their bikes. Though Varkkichan was taken to hospital, his life could not be saved.
