HC pulls up govt for handing over Shukkoor case to CBI

KOCHI: Kerala High Court has asked the government whose interest was at play behind its decision to handover the Shukkoor muder case trial to CBI. The court put forth this question on Friday when it was informed about the government’s decision to hand over the Shukkoor case to the CBI.

The court also asked whether the government would assign all cases involving political leaders to the CBI in the same way.
The government told the court that the police inquiry into the case was going in the right direction. “In that case what is the need for a CBI inquiry? Was it done to satisfy the mother of Muslim Youth League activist Shukkoor?” asked the court.

Continuing its critical comments, the court asked the government’s counsel if the CPM was sabotaging the inquiry, what sort of governance it was exhibiting. “If such a situation emerges, will the government have the moral right to continue in power?” asked the court and added that the police getting easily influenced by the accused was not an acceptable right practice.
