KOCHI: The dawn to dusk hartal called by the BJP in Ernakulam in protest against police action against its activists in Thrippunithura while staging a march seeking justice to a girl student belonging to a dalit community who attempted to kill herself following rumours allegedly spread by SFI activists, is stated to be total. Educational institutions, shops and offices remain closed. No untoward incidents have been reported. The hartal has stalled the metro construction and the IT sector.
Only a few shops and firms are opened in the district. Shops at the main centres like MG Road, Broadway, Marine Drive and Edappally are closed. The hartal has crippled normal life in the district. Only a thin attendance is registered in banks and government offices. A few private vehicles were seen on the roads. KSRTC services including long route services were suspended.
