RANCHI: Kerala emerged champions for a record 17th straight year as it won the overall championship at the 59th national school athletic meet concluded in Ranchi on Sunday.
Kerala emerged champions with 309 points bagging 38 gold medals, 28 silver medals and 16 bronze medals. This is Kerala’s highest third gold hunt in the national school meet. Kerala has bagged more gold before in Kochi and Pune.
In the school meet held in Etawah, Kerala secured 33 gold. Haryana is in the second place with 11 gold.
Kerala has to its credit six national records in the meet.
V V Jisha of Kerala bagged three gold in senior girls 200 meter, 400 meter and 400 meter hurdles. Jisha is the second Keralite bagging triple gold in Ranchi after Chitra.
Jessy Joseph and C Babith bagged gold in senior girls 800 metres and junior girls 800 metres. Jisma Mathew obtained gold in junior girls 200 metres. Shani Shaji bagged gold in senior girls’ pole vault and Gopika Narayan bagged silver in the same item. Rugma Udayan achieved gold in junior girls’ triple jump. Archana secured bronze in junior girls 800 metre.
