Verdict in bar case before March 31

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court Wednesday said the final verdict on government’s liquor policy will be pronounced before March 31. The court said this when the government informed them that the new liquor policy will come into effect from April 1st onwards.

The government told the court that the liquor policy was formed after a scientific study was conducted. Kapil Sibal, who appeared for the government, said a study conducted by a single commission found a rise on the liquor consumption.

The government’s intention is not a complete ban on liquor or a liberal liquor policy. The government informed the court in between the hearing that a control on liquor consumption is needed. The control would be based on the commission’s report.

Bar license will be issued only to five star hotels from April 1st onwards.
