Yusufali Kechery is no more

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Veteran poet and lyricist Yusufali Kechery has expired. The end came at a private hospital in Kochi at 5:40 pm on Saturday. He was 80.

He had been admitted to Amrita hospital in Kochi early January following severe pneumonia. 

Yusufali Kechery was also famous as a producer and director from Kerala. He was also a frontrunner among the modern era Malayalam poets and has been decorated with numerous awards such as Odakkuzhal Award, Kerala Sahitya Academy Award and Vallathol Award, to name a few.

His native place is Kechery in Thrissur. Having completed his Bachelor's degree in Arts and Law, he started his career as a lawyer and freelance writer.

A prolific lyricist, he also produced and directed films. Sindooracheppu (1971), which was directed by actor Madhu is the first film he produced and for that he had written the screenplay and lyrics for all the songs in it. He made his directorial debut in 1973 with Maram (Tree), a film written by M.T. Vasudevan Nair. He also directed the films Vanadevatha (1977) and Neelathamara (1979). He wrote the lyrics for the hit songs in the film Dhwani. He was also honoured with the National Award for a Sanskrit song written for the Malayalam film Mazha
