Karayi Rajan resigns as District Panchayat president

KANNUR: An accused in the murder of NDF activist Fasal and CPM local leader Karai Rajan  has resigned from the post of Kannur District Panchayat. The decision regarding this was taken at the District Committee meeting held at Kannur on Saturday. Rajan has handed over the resignation letter to district committee.

Karayi Rajan and Thalassery City chairman Karayi Chandrasekharan were denied permission to enter Kannur district, though they had won the local body elections. Rajan decided to step down in this context. But, Chandrasekharan will continue as Thalassery chairman.

There have been rumblings within the party over Karayis continuing in the party positions in the face of court restrictions on them. A section of the party men want their removal as they think Karayis continuing in their post would have an undesired impact on the party, politically and organisationally. Moreover UDF has turned the matter into a political tool against the LDF.

Though the Karayis had approached the high court for bail relaxation, it was rejected. In this circumstances, the party leadership feels that if the resignation is delayed, it could result in more opposition within the party. They fear it may also affect the party’s election prospects.
