THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In an election result that confirmed a triangular contest, the LDF is almost certain to retain its power in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
When the Left has a clear lead what is more significant is the BJP's unexpected gain in the local body election.
Out of the 100 wards, the LDF has shown its lead in 34 wards. The BJP, which at present has just six councillors, is heading for a lead that would ensure their place in the Opposition, relegating the UDF to the third position.
UDF which is having 42 seats at present is heading for a humiliating defeat at many wards
In the first two hours' counting, UDF was leading only in 11 seats.
The initial assessment is that the betrayal by rebels and poor selection of candidates may have cost the UDF dearly.
