‘Othalanga’ consumption: Girl students’ condition serious

KAYAMKULAM: Two girl students who consumed Othalanga fruit (Cerbera odollam) have been admitted to Alappuzha Medical College after they started experiencing discomfort. According to doctors, their condition is not out of danger. They are the eight standard students of a school in Krishnapuram.

The suicide attempt came to light after they disclosed the matter to their classmates in the morning at around 10:30, who in turn informed their teachers about it.

The teachers then rushed the students to Kayamkulam government hospital for primary treatment and after that they were shifted to the Medical College.

Both students are close friends and they started from home at 8 am on Saturday. They had tuition till 9:30 am and it is believed that they consumed the fruit after that. Yesterday the parents had given them a dressing down for not studying well. Moreover one of their parents had received a call from some other parent that both were loafing around without showing interest in studies. The students are believed to have consumed poison after being hurt by these developments.
