MALAPPURAM: Five passengers of a tourist bus were killed after the vehicle in which they were travelling collided with a lorry at Ayikkarappadi in the district. Almost twenty persons sustained injuries in the accident. The condition of many injured is stated to be serious. The dead has been identified as Raveendran (54), Omana (42), Devi (67), Surya (13) and Athul (10).
The accident happened early Monday morning at 4 am. The incident happened when the team was returning back to Mattannur in Kannur after attending a marriage in Salem. The driver of the ill-fated bus is suspected to have dozed off while driving, eventually leading to the accident.
Hearing a loud noise, the local residents first came to the rescue of the passengers followed by the police and fire force.
