UDF leads in Malappuram; LDF makes gains

MALAPURAM: Though the UDF is leading in the Malappuram district, it faced major setbacks this time, compared with the last time,
The CPM's performance this time is that reminds one of 1995's results.

The League received a big blow in Kondotti municipality where Congress rebels joined hands with the CPM. Here the rebels had officially befriended the CPM to form a populist front. The hint is that they will attain power in the municipality.

In Parappanangady municipality also, there is a neck-to-neck race between the League and CPM-Congress rebel combo. In the ward of education minister Abdu Rabb, Congress dissident Haneefa Kodapally under populist front won by 230 votes.

Here about six prominent Muslim leaders are heading towards defeat.

Thiroor municipality came back to the LDF (LDF- 19, UDF-18). Last time LDF had only 7 seats. UDF won 10 seats less this time.

In Perinthalmanna corporation also, CPM has a clear lead. In Ponnani the UDF has a slight upper hand.

In Panchayats, UDF is leading in 337 wards and LDF in 208 wards. The independent candidates have a lead in 107 seats. BJP is leading in seven wards. In block panchayats, out of 55 seats, UDF is leading in 39 seats, Independents in five and BJP in two seats.

In district panchayats, UDF is leading in 17 seats, LDF in five seats. In the corporation, UDF is leading in 175 seats, LDF in 71 , BJP in 15 and the Independent candidates in 45 seats.
