KOCHI: High Court Justice Kemal Pasha has said that when the media report Court proceedings, they should be more careful. They should only report what would go on recorded in courts. He was taking part in a seminar on court reporting held at Ernakulam Press Club on Saturday.
“There is no harm in reporting open court proceedings. But some caution should be exercised while closed-door court proceedings are reported. First of all, the reporter should identify whether the reported news would tantamount to the contempt of court. When a thing is said by a judge or an advocate, the reporter should understand the essence of what is said and then report. Television channels should be very careful about this. We were witness to the bad-effects of reporting at the time of Mumbai terror attack,” he explained.
He said the people had the right to know what was happening in the court. “The observations made by judges in a case need not appear in the verdict. On the other hand, the judges do not have the right to speak about anything that is happening in the country and there personal opinions are irrelevant.”
Incidentally, Pasha said serials needed censoring. “Certain serial themes are very dangerous. What we see today in serials are husband and wife cheating each other, elopement and abortion. Thus it is an advanced version of trash literature,” he said, adding that he delved on this topic as it was requested by a top artiste.
