THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Palode Ravi of the Congress has been elected as the new deputy speaker of the Kerala Assembly. Ravi represents the Nedumangad constituency. Palode Ravi obtained 74 votes in the secret ballot voting held in the assembly at 9.30 am. E Chandrashekaran of the CPI obtained 65 votes. T M Thomas Isaac of the opposition did not arrive to cast his vote as he had gone to participate in the summit about global warming.
Speaker N Shakthan and the nominated member had cast their votes. The deputy speaker’s post fell vacant following the elevation of N Sakthan as Speaker, following the death of the incumbent G Karthikeyan.
Members of the ruling and opposition congratulated Palode Ravi elected as the deputy speaker. The Speaker handed over the seat to Palode Ravi. As the new deputy speaker, he first considered the adjournment motion on Vizhinjam harbor project. He was given the chair next to the opposition leader. He is also the chairman of the official language committee of the assembly.
