Govt gave sanction to build 431 check dams: P J Joseph

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In reply to Ahammed Kabeer MLA’s calling attention motion in the Assembly on Wednesday, Minister P J Joseph said, after coming to power, the current UDF government gave sanction for building 431 check dams/regulators.

“Sanction has been given for the operation of 190 check dams at a cost Rs 108 crore for replenishing the source of drinking water under drought relief scheme. NABARD’s recognition was also obtained for the operation of 21 bunds built at a cost of Rs 90 core,” he said.

“The intrusion of salt water from the sea into the rivers has made them unfit for agricultural and domestic purposes. The problem is severe during the high tide. To prevent this, bunds are being built across the rivers,” said the minister, who added that steps would also be taken to protect the source of Mankada Moorkhanad Drinking water scheme.
