THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The budget speech presented by Chief Minister Ooomen Chandy on Friday was a record in terms of its duration. The speech was the lengthiest one in Kerala history. The chief minister took two hours 54 minutes to make UDF cabinet’s last budget speech. In 2013, finance minister K M Mani took two hours and 50 minutes.
The chief minister started his speech quoting the words of the late president APJ Abdul Kalam.
It was after 29 years that a chief minister was presenting the budget. E K Naynar was the chief minister to have presented the budget before that. In the history of Kerala Chandy is the fourth chief minister who has presented the budget. Besides Nayanar, C Achutha Menon and R Shankar had presented the budget.
This was Oommen Chandy’s fifth budget presentation. The budgets for the period from 1990-91 to 94-95 were presented by Chandy as he was the finance minister then.
