LDF retains Kozhikode Corporation

KOZHIKODE: Continuing its winning spree, the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) retained majority in the Kozhikode Corporation Council winning 48 out of 75 wards in the civic poll result of which was declared Saturday.

Improving its position by seven seats as against 41 it secured in 2010 poll, the LDF shattered the dream of its principal rival, the Congress-headed United Democratic Front, which launched an aggressive campaign to end the former's monopoly for 40 years, shrinking its strength to 20 instead 34 it won in the previous council.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, which drew blank in the last election, walked away with seven seats.

The BJP, which stood second in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation winning 34 seats, also performed well in the other 3-tier local bodies pausing threat to both the principal political formations - the LDF and the UDF - in the state.
