Phase 2 voting underway for civic polls

KOCHI: Polling in the second and final phase for civic polls is underway in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malapppuram. In all 1.39 voters will exercise their franchise today. A brisk polling has been reported in many of the districts due to heavy rains.

Polling began late in the booth of Kendriya Vidyalaya at the southern naval command as the place was submerged in water.  Due to a technical snag in the electronic voting machines, polling was disrupted in some booths at Kakkazham, Muhamma, Pathiyoor and Arattupuzha in Alappuzha.  A new machine was brought later and then polling continued.

Muslim League state chief Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal cast his vote early in the morning itself. He told reporters that the situation is favourable for the UDF and is expecting a thumping majority. The UDF has a chance of a good win and the people will vote for development, said Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty.. The disputes in Malappuram will not reflect in the polls, he said.

In seven districts there are 44,388 candidates in 12651 wards. To prevent irregularities in polling, webcasting and video graphing will continue in the second phase also. The commission has arranged webcasting in 186 sensitive booths in various districts.
