Voting continues, 50% polling till 2 pm

KOCHI: Polling for the second phase of local body polls is continuing here Thursday. Over 50 % polling was recorded till 2 pm in seven districts, even as malfunctioning of EVMs affected voting in certain areas. A highest percentage of 60 was recorded in Kottayam and a lowest of 45% in Malappuram and Thrissur.

No untoward incidents have been reported so far. Polling started in a slow pace in the beginning following heavy rains but later when the weather was fine, voters reached the polling booths.

Polling machines malfunctioned at Varappuzha, Chittattukara, Karukutti, Vypeen, Alangad and Thripunithura. Polling resumed after the snag was rectified. The officials got fed up waiting for voters in many places.

Political leaders, film personalities and activists exercised their franchise in many districts. UDF convenor P P Thankachan, Ministers K Babu, Anoop Jacob, Kochi former mayor Tony Chammani, actors Dileep, Kaviyoor Ponnamma and many others came to the polling booths in the morning itself.

K Babu voted in Thripunithura and Anoop Jacob with his wife voted at Koothattukkulam. Kaviyoor Ponnama, in her 70’s exercised her vote at Aluva. Mammootty and his son Dulqar Salman were not able to vote as their names were found missing in the voters list.
