THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A turnout of 29% was recorded till 11 am in the polling held to 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala, which began at 7 am Thursday morning. A long queue of voters is witnessed in almost all the polling booths.
There are a total of 2,42,51,942 voters in the state. A voter can cast his vote till 6 pm and there will be no interval. If there is a queue even at 6 pm, the voters will be allowed to vote after a slip is given. A voter coming after 6 pm will not be allowed to vote. Votes will be counted on May 16.
The fate of 269 candidates, including 27 female, would be decided by 24.25 million electorates in the state.
UDF candidate N K Premachandran and his family had to wait for half an hour due to the malfunctioning of EVMs at the polling booth in Kollam. The leader, wife Dr Geetha and son Karthik waited at booth No 40 in Kollam Christhu Raja School.
Many of the noted leaders exercised their franchise Thursday morning itself.
CPI (M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Minister Mullappali Ramachandran and CPI (M) politburo member M A Baby were among those who cast their ballots in the initial hour.
Christy Fernandes, the LDF candidate of Ernakulam, also registered his vote. Bindhu Krishna, the UDF candidate of Attingal, exercised her franchise at Chathanur. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala casted his vote in Mavelikkara.
