Major robbery in Kodungallur Devi Temple

KODUNGALLUR: Robbers on Monday broke into the strong room of famous Kodungallur Kurumba Bhagavathy temple and got away with a money box containing lakhs of rupees.

While Devaswom board officials said that about Rs 20 lakh was stolen, the temple advisory committee members put the loss at about Rs 1 crore. The incident happened in the night.

The temple staff, who reached the temple early morning, first noticed the robbery. The robbers managed to enter the strong after damaging its windows. All the money boxes were full since the festival had come to an end only a few days ago.  

The initial inquiry showed that nine boxed had gone missing and they had the capacity to store about Rs 9 lakh. Many devotees gathered at the spot after coming to know about the incident. Now, people have started criticising the temple authorities for not making security arrangement for the strong where money in huge amounts is stored. More over, the room is in dilapidated condition.

It is suspected that a big gang is behind the theft. Top police officials and fingerprint experts visited the spot.
