Job aspirants threaten suicide


KASARGOD: A group of job aspirants Thursday threatened to commit suicide by jumping off from Central University of Kerala (CUK) building at Periya in this district if promise of providing them employment was not met.

Police said the group comprising 14 people hailing from nearby Malathumpara colony who climbed up the 4-storey building and threatened to commit suicide by jumping off the building if the promise made by authorities to give employment in lieu of their land acquired for the central varsity was not met.

The youth said the university were hesitant to provide them job, except temporary placement for three of them, ignoring the promise made while acquiring land despite repeated requests.

They said they wanted to get an assurance from the authorities before the visit of Minister of State for Human Resource Development (Higher Education) Mahendra Nath Pandey, who is scheduled to inaugurate a hostel building on October 8.

However, sources said the varsity was in the process of providing dwelling units to those who surrendered their landed property.

Stating efforts were on to bring down the youths, they said Revenue Divisional Officer, Tehsildar and senior police officers were camping at the site.
