Crime branch probe sought in Wayanad forest fire

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The report of Additional Chief Conservator of Forests (Vigilance) C S Yalakki handed over to Minister of Forests Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has sought a crime branch probe on the forest fire in Wayanad. The report says 417.83 hectares of forest land have been destroyed in the fire.

Forest fire is man-made and there is no extremist connection in the incident. But there are some limitations in bringing the guilty before law. So, the report has recommended in handing over the case to the crime branch.

The forest fire was reported in Wayanad between March 15 and 20.

The report said of the total area destroyed in the fire, about 200 hectares, was in the Begur forest range in the north Wayanad territorial forest division. Eighty hectares was in Tholppetty, 10 hectares in Muthanga and another 10 hectares in the Sultan Bathery forest ranges in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (WWS).

The fire did not cause any damage neither to the adivasis nor to their properties. Meantime, trees of 18 types have been destroyed in the fire. It has not been evaluated whether trees like rosewood have been destroyed. One can ascertain about it only an inspection is conducted after the rainy season.

The report has asked to appoint more employees in Wayanad range to prevent forest fire and also a fire protection squad should be formed.
