THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: National Human Rights Commission has asked explanation from Kerala and four other states for not being punctual in paying the wages under the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
The panel pointed out that in Kerala, as many as 13.4 lakh people got delayed payment. It has given six weeks’ time for the government to give explanation.
The states such as West Bengal, Bihar, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh have been asked to give explanation for delaying the payment of wages, while states such as Maharashtra and Jharkhand should explain the situation that led to the suicide of workers those who were denied wages. Rural development secretary has also been made a party in the issue.
The scheme ensures 100 day’s work in a year.
