Fire at Vadi beach: One loses palm

KOLLAM: In a fire that broke out at Vadi beach around 10:15 pm on Tuesday, a fisherman’s palm got severed and nine more suffered severe burns.

The police who inquired about the incident have found out that the mishap occurred due to some careless behaviour during the New Year celebrations. Many huts and utensils used to store fishing equipment were gutted.

Police said that some one in drunken state had thrown lighted cigarette bud onto a thatched roof, resulting in fire. The fire spread from one hut to another and in between, a gas cylinder stored inside a hut also burst. Fisherman Sudhakaran who went to evacuate the hut lost his palm as a splinter from the burning gas cylinder hit the palm.

“Sudhakaran has been admitted to Thiruvannthapuram Medical College, while other injured have been shifted to District hospitals,” said the police
