Drinking water shortage: Collectors asked to take steps

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM; The cabinet has given instructions to district collectors to take necessary steps to help the State face shortage of drinking water during the summer season. The government will allot Rs One crore to help collectors deal with the water crisis.

The chief minister has said that “since the model code of conduct prior to the election is in effect, all steps will be taken with the permission of the Election Commission.”

Rs 10 lakh has been sanctioned for panchayats, Rs15 lakh for Municipalities and Rs 25 lakh for Corporations. Local bodies have been given the permission to expend money for its needs. Steps will be taken to revive the cashew nut factory in Kollam. The cashew nut will be made available through local tenders as calling of global tenders proved futile. Rs 30 crore was earlier given for the reopening of the factory, heeding to the demands of political parties and Trade Unions. The workers’ incentives are being paid using this amount,” the chief minister said.
