KOCHI: Saumini Jain has been elected as the new Mayor of Kochi corporation and T J Vinod the deputy Mayor.
Congress parliamentary party meeting has approved the names of both the above persons. The move to share the tenure of Mayor didn’t succeed as the KPCC took a stern stand against the sharing of the tenure.
Saumini had been a former standing committee chief in the A group while I group representative is Vinod. KPCC president V M Sudheeran had earlier rejected the move made by district leaders to give two and a half years’ (second half) time for Shyny Mathew, who belongs to Latin Catholics community.
Following this, after the end of a marathon discussion that started in the morning, Parliamentary party meeting closed in on Saumini.
KPCC General Secretary P M Suresh Babu who is in charge of the Ernakulam district also took part in the meeting. Councillor Premkumar however walked out of the meeting alleging that the party leadership had been trying to appease the Latin Catholics community.
Finally the district party leaders decided in favour of Saumini instead of the newbie Shiny, considering the former’s experience in politics.
