LPG tanker lorry tips over on auto; one dies

KOZHIKODE: An LPG tanker lost control and overturned on an auto rickshaw at Kozhikode Westhill on Saturday, killing one person and triggering panic in surrounding areas. The deceased has been identified as Kunduparambu Ravi.

Police have evacuated people within one kilometre radius of the accident spot as gas was found to be leaking from the lorry. Electricity supply in the area was cut and vehicular movement in the area was stopped.       

The accident happened at 3:30 pm and at a place near Government Guesthouse on Westhill-Easthill mini bypass. The LPG tanker lorry, owned by Indian Oil Corporation, was coming from Kannur.

The police said the lorry overturned when the driver took a sharp right turn at Chunkam, where there were two sharp left-right turns. The auto was parked on the left side for some repair works and Ravi was standing near it. The lorry overturned on the auto crushing it along with Ravi, who died on the spot.

Ravi’s body has been shifted to Kozhikode Medical College. Meanwhile, the driver and helper of the lorry fled the scene.   

Fire force personnel along with the police are carrying out the rescue work. Experts from Chelari IOC plant have also reached the spot.
