THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The body of poet R Manoj (44) was found in the Chemmaruthy river on Sunday evening. He was reported to be missing by his family and relatives since Friday night. According to the Kallambalam police, he is believed to have slipped and fallen in the river while he was on his way home.
However, a case of unnatural death has been registered, the police said. The body was shifted to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College for post-mortem after the police initiated the inquest proceedings in the case. The dead hailed from the Parakunnu Plavila house in Navaikulam.
During the search efforts that commenced after he had gone missing, it came to light that he had accepted a lift on his friend’s motorcycle and had got off near the Cherappad bridge, near his house, on Friday. The body was soon found from the river near the bridge.
The dead, a State council member of the Progressive Federation of College Teachers (a feeder organisation of the Communist Party of India), was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Malayalam at the NSS College in Nilamel. He was conferred a PhD in Malayalam literature by the University of Kerala in 2005. He has published many poetry compilations including ‘Aazham’, ‘Vanam’ and ‘Bhasha’.
He is survived by his parents and three siblings. The funeral will be held within the compounds of his house on Monday, sources said.
