Honest officers can’t be threatened using ‘sword of discipline’, says VS

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan has come out in support of Police Housing Construction DGP Jacob Thomas. He said loyal police officers couldn’t be silenced using the sword of discipline.

“The fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution is applicable to government officials as it is, to ordinary citizens. The response against misrule is not response against government policies. Reacting against corruption and misrule is never breach of norms. Before taking action against Jacob Thomas IPS, the chief minister and the home minister should have gone through the verdict of the case between Supreme Court’s Vijayashankar Pandey and the Central government,” he said in a statement.

VS further said, Mani’s bribery case came up for inquiry when Jacob Thomas was in the Vigilance. “It was on the basis of his instructions that SP Sukeshan submitted a factual report to the government later. What the government did was that it made Vigilance director to make certain changes in that report and submit it in the court. As that is the case, it is the right of any citizen to react publically. So, the government’s way of silencing those who speak against corruption will not work,” he added.
