Six killed after vehicle plunges into waterlogged pit

THRISSUR: In a tragic end to his homecoming, a 39-year-old man, who arrived Friday morning from the Gulf, was killed along with four other family members when their vehicle plunged into a waterlogged pit on the National Highway at Nandikara in Puthukad area Friday.

Ishak Ismail was received at Nedumbassery airport by his mother, wife and two children and a brother-in-law in the wee hours today. The family was returning to their home town in Alathur in Palakkad when the tragedy struck.

The vehicle went out of control while negotiating a curve and fell into the pit and was completely submerged.

Police managed to rescue Hyas (10), who has been admitted to the Jubilee Mission hospital here.

Bodies of Ismail, his mother Howaumma (58), wife Hafsath (32), daughter Irfana (3), brother-in-law Manssor (42) and that of the driver Krishnaprasad (36) have been recovered.

A search is on for one more person who was reportedly in the vehicle, police said.
